For Christmas this year we went to Costa Rica. It was heaven.

These two loved the beach. The water was so warm that we could play in it for hours and never get cold.

Mara hated the beach. She doesn't like sand, and didn't appreciate getting wet, either. She was dubbed "city girl" by some of the people at the resort.

This was our home for our trip.

Rob got Mara a bunch of sun dresses when he was in Mexico. She can't wear them at home (too cold), but they were perfect for the hot days in Costa Rica.

The view from the front door of our hut. The swimming pool in front and just a few feet beyond that was the beach.

The boys got their own cameras for the trip, which they were so excited about. It kept them really entertained the whole time. It felt like Mara and I had the paparazzi after us, though. They kept following us around and snapping pictures of us. Ashton has a whole bunch of really terrible pictures of me. (upward angle, really close, first thing in the morning)

We went to church on Sunday at this little chapel. We found it by driving around the little town we knew it was in, and in our very broken Spanish asking people if they knew where the Mormon church was. Finally we saw someone walking down the street in a white shirt and tie so we asked him. It was an interesting experience. It was all in Spanish (of course) and there were only about 10 other people there.

We kept driving by this place and thought it was funny. I think they actually sold pots, as in pottery.

Mara doesn't like her feet to touch the sand.

Ashton swam in the swimming pool for hours every day. The setup was ideal. While Mara napped, the boys would swim in the pool. Our hut was only a few steps from the pool, so we felt comfortable leaving her there and hanging out by the pool while she slept.

They don't like to get their picture taken.

Every night we'd sit out and look at the stars, and watch the giant bats that would swoop down over the pool to eat the bugs.

Walking back to our hut after a morning at the beach.

Ashton karate chopping the waves

Mara liked to sit in the shade, away from the water and off the sand. Like we said "city girl".

The place we stayed at had a really good restaurant. You can see it in the background. We ate there almost every breakfast and dinner.

We took a boat tour to see some wildlife.

We saw tons of really big crocodiles.

The boat driver kept trying to trap the crocodiles so we could look at them close up. Mara was so excited about this crocodile that she tried to reach for it and almost fell out of the boat. Rob quickly grabbed her...

and this is where she stayed for the rest of the time.

We saw a ton of monkeys. They climbed right on the boat and tried to grab things from people.

The restaurant had all kinds of tropical juices. Mara loved them.

At the airport waiting to go home. The airport didn't have any walls, just a roof.

How fun! You guys take such interesting and exciting vacations; thanks for sharing. And there's hope for Mara yet ... Emma and Maddalyn didn't like the sand or ocean when they were her age, either. But now we can barely pull them away when it's time to head home. Of course, they're exposed to it more often. :) But we can't enjoy going in the water at Christmas time. It was 29* out this morning. Brrr!
I am now 100% jealous! What a great trip. I wish I could have traded Mara places.
That picture of the bat is a amazing. Kind of scary - but really amazing!
Glad you had a great Christmas! Happy 2010!
Hello world travelers! Where's the next spot on the map?! I'm so jealous. Was this your 2nd time going to Costa Rica, 'cause I remember you either going there, or wanting to. Either way, glad you had a great trip! Looks like fun.
